A house this size can swallow a landscape. Anything too small around the base of it simply disappears.
The answer was structure: clipped boxwood run in long lines to hold the shape through winter, columnar trees to carry the eye up the elevation, and boulders set into the beds to break up the length of the walls.
Colour that arrives in layers
Variegated hostas, red roses and perennial planting sit inside that frame, so there is something coming into season from spring through to the end of summer without the beds ever looking empty in between.
Front and back treated as one job
The same planting vocabulary carries around the side of the house to the rear, where a curved paver path runs along a hedge line to the open lawn.
Recognised by the MGIA
The project received a 2023 Gold Award for Residential Landscape Construction from the Michigan Green Industry Association.
